Nervous System Activism
Maintaining boundaries, life force energy, and personal power in a world gone mad
WHAT IS A MINI-CLASS? This is a new kind of lecture-style class where we'll dive into a specific topic, provide nervous system-informed education, and also offer reminders to stay connected to self and the environment in the process. A short Q&A will take place towards the end of the class. There is no weekly commitment or monthly subscription required. If you can't make it live, you'll receive the recording after the class.
The root of the term activism is the word, active.
And its Latin root, activus, from actus is: “a doing” or “to drive, draw out or forth, move.”
One way for humanity to heal and ensure its positive evolution is to ensure more and more people ‘activate’ their healing powers via nervous system regulation.
Our nervous system (and its many branches) drives much, if not all, of human behaviour.
How we learn, how we parent and raise our young, how we run our businesses and institutions, and take care of our local communities - all of this, and more, is dictated by our core physiology and its sense of safety (or unsafety).
For example, when solid nervous system regulation is the driving force of how we live, we experience healing and connection, learning and creation. We seek to deescalate conflict (even if we aren’t sure it’ll work, but we try!). Sensible and sustainable solutions become the desired norm.
But when dysregulation is front and center, and our survival physiology drives all our actions, we live with frequent conflict, pain, and abuse. Anxiety and depression, not to mention chronic illness and fatigue, become the common mode of human living.
One way for humanity to heal and ensure its positive evolution is to ensure more and more people ‘activate’ their healing powers via nervous system regulation.
This class will make the case for the utter importance of focusing on self and our immediate surroundings and connections, plus how selfless it is to want (and crave) a nervous system that heals, connects, and craves simplicity, goodness, and vitality.
Let this be your permission slip to focus on you!

Beyond The Hacks - Real (Nervous System) Healing Explained
This class is for those who might be utterly confused as to why I don’t recommend breathwork alone, vagus nerve stimulators, or other quick fix techniques or solely somatic exercises, for healing trauma and restoring nervous regulation (btw: if you are confused, that is completely understandable!).
It’s also for those who have tried these things, felt a little improvement, but then felt like they went backwards (note: in class, we’ll explain this in detail!).
Or maybe you find relief, but unless you keep doing these things, you maintain a baseline state of being anxious and stressed out, or the flipside, numbed out and disconnected, depressed (btw: if this is you, there is a reason for this, so come to class and learn what to do instead).
Bottom line: There is a lot of misinformation out there and this new mini-class will dive into these confusions, and provide what we have discovered to be a solid way to slowly, over time, in a titrated manner, get to actual nervous system regulation, healing, and vitality.
I’ll be co-teaching with my husband and colleague, Seth Lyon.
The Hidden Physiology of Shame and the Path Back to Vitality
Toxic shame is a horrible experience of feeling worthless and unwanted, which usually starts when primary caregivers send messages that your true self is unacceptable. It can come from obvious trauma, but also from common, unconscious behaviors like parents being unable to handle a child's energy, or knowing how to accurately attune to them and support their authenticity.
This toxic shame often results in a feeling of collapse and loss of vitality, and the key to changing it is connecting to something we call, "Healthy Aggression." And the bridge between toxic shame and Healthy Aggression…. may surprise you!
Join Irene and Seth for this lecture-based class that will explain the physiology that comes along with being toxically shamed, and the steps one can take to start moving out of a state of fawning and collapse, and back towards authenticity and vitality.
Titration. How To Not Get Overwhelmed When Healing Stored Trauma
Titration is a concept that is originally from chemistry, but was popularized by Peter Levine, founder of Somatic Experiencing, to depict the importance of touching into the tiniest 'taste' of a human experience so that one does not get overwhelmed when healing stored trauma. While simple in theory, its practical application is vast and packs a positive punch for a new healing paradigm that's the opposite of exposure therapy and "no pain no gain" modalities.
This concept of 'titration' also applies to some of the most known and popular behavioural change remedies for enhancing aerobic capacity, improving physical strength, and working towards changing any habit so that it sticks.
Healing trauma and restoring nervous system regulation is no different.
Join Irene and Seth Lyon for this NEW mini-class to learn how this concept of titration is used in somatic trauma healing (and more!).
Good Will Hunting Explained: What This Iconic Movie Scene Reveals About Healing Truama
In class, we break down an iconic scene from the movie, Good Will Hunting, and why it’s a perfect piece of cinema to showcase what it takes to heal the deep, toxic wounds of early and developmental trauma.
